Meet Paul Davis MBE
Founder and Director of pd Safety Consulting Ltd

Paul has invaluable experience as a safety investigator and human factors training specialist in two State level accident investigation bodies in the UK.
His background is in aviation; he was a pilot for 30 years, instructing on helicopters in the military and also flying commercial airliners. Flying and operating in the most challenging environments, the importance of teamwork, decision making and communication were instilled as key elements to delivering success.
Having held various leadership roles in safety management, in 2010 he was chosen to help establish the Military Air Accident Investigation Branch. He studied safety and air accident investigation to MSc with Cranfield University.
As Head of Operations Investigation at the MilAAIB from 2011 ~ 2017, he developed investigation policy and methodology and deployed around the world to investigate incidents and accidents with a focus on the system and not the individual. He was humbled by the award of an MBE in 2015 for his contribution to military air safety.
In 2015, Paul became involved with the NHS when he was invited to apply his expertise advising a national maternity safety initiative. This voluntary work resulted in the Labour Ward Leaders’ Program which was a HSJ Safety Awards finalist. After six rewarding years as Head of Operations at the MilAAIB, he was co-opted to the implementation team and then recruited as one of the first National Investigators at the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB); a world leading initiative to achieve organisational learning across the NHS in England.

During the period that followed he undertook investigations alongside experts in a broad spectrum of healthcare domains, giving him a unique insight into the workings of our health and care system.
During five years at HSIB Paul spent time as the Interim Associate Director of Maternity Investigations and, in March 2020, he volunteered to augment the safety team at his local acute Trust during the response to COVID. After leaving HSIB he had the opportunity to work as a Patient Safety Specialist in an NHS Trust transitioning to the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework as an early adopter.
He now runs pd Safety Consulting from his base in the South West, continuing to explore his fascination with safety science and helping organisations to confidently embrace safety culture.
